Australian teacher who died in Kenya may have been targeted, shot ‘on her knees’

The lawyer of an Australian teacher killed in Kenya claims she was the victim of a targeted attack not a botched robbery.

Gabrielle Maina was walking down a street in an affluent suburb in Nairobi on Thursday when she was shot by men on a motorcycle.

Her lawyer George King’ori has rejected claims the attack was a random robbery gone wrong as the angle the bullet hit her indicates she was likely on her knees pleading for her life when she was shot, the ABC reported.

“There were markings on her knees, showing she was most likely kneeling… and maybe begging for mercy,” Mr King’ori told ABC Radio on Sunday.

“It is important for them (Department of Foreign Affairs) to keep on pushing until it is certain as to what caused her death,” he added.

Kenyan police are investigating Ms Maina’s death. No charges have been laid.

Ms Maina, from Armidale, had been working as the head teacher at Nairobi’s Hillcrest Preparatory School.
