Christmas celebrations peaceful, says Police

The Eve of Christmas and Christmas Day, which were characterized by high movements across the country, were generally peaceful either in communities or on roads, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has said.

RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege contributed this to the public, who heed messages on “safety and enjoying responsibly.”

He said that people displayed outstanding compliance with the law and traffic road safety following several messages passed previously calling the public to enjoy responsibly and to avoid anything that would cause all sorts of insecurity.

“These joyous moments, if not controlled can also emanate into dangers; we used various communication platforms including social media and telecommunications messages reminding people to take safe first and to enjoy responsibly minding the beliefs and peace of other people, which is paying off,” he added.

“The celebrations are so far peaceful across the country, we have not registered any major incidents. We take this opportunity to thank the citizenry for the responsible conduct and partnership in all aspects of safety and security they continue to display,” he noted.

The RNP spokesperson urged public to “keep the good collaborative efforts” to ensure incident-free festivities.

“Security begins with an individual,” he said.

“If you are drunk don’t drive or ride because that would be suicide and exposing other people either in the car or on road, to danger”

He also reminded the general public to take safety precautions in their homes as they leave to enjoy the festivities especially at night, adding that wrongdoers sometimes take advantage of such seasons to break into houses to steal.

ACP Badege further appealed organisers of music concerts, churches, bars and night spots and other people holding celebrations, to regulate their noise not to affect the peace, beliefs and rights of others.
