LIVE: Opening Ceremony of the 17th Francophonie Summit

Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, is hosting the XVII Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) on 11 and 12 October.

All the delegations have already arrived at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex, where they were welcomed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and OIF Secretary General Michaelle Jean

Upon the start of today’s plenary work of the organization, Armenia is expected to hand over the OIF chairmanship to Madagascar.

All the sessions of the summit are held behind closed doors, with decisions adopted by consensus.

Several resolutions are set to be adopted in conclusion of the summit on Friday, with one of them reflecting on the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict settlement.

The Francophonie summit has brought together some 100 delegations featuring 3500 members, including leaders of over 40 countries.

President Paul Kagame is among other head of states who is attending the 17th Summit of La Francophonie.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his spouse Brigitte Macron, as well as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Yerevan late on Wednesday to participate in the summit.
