Rwanda was hit by heavy rains on Tuesday night, resulting in a devastating loss of life. Many were asleep when the downpour began, making rescue efforts challenging and contributing to the death toll of over 130 people as of today. Among the victims was the five-year-old daughter of Claudette Nyiraneza, whose lifeless body was found beneath the rubble. Neighbors eventually aided in her recovery.
The damage caused by the downpour was extensive, with Governor François Habitegeko reporting that many houses had collapsed, crushing their inhabitants. Landslides had also rendered many of the area’s main roads unusable.
As floodwaters continue to rise, Rwanda’s public broadcaster, RBA, reports that the number of casualties is expected to increase. Relief efforts are underway, with emergency supplies being delivered to those whose homes were destroyed, and the government is working to reach every damaged house to rescue anyone who may be trapped.
Rwanda’s President has extended his condolences to those affected by the disaster and is focused on the safe evacuation of residents from areas at high risk. The government’s priority is to ensure that no one is left behind, with rescue and relief efforts being coordinated to reach those in need.
While Rwanda often experiences heavy rains between March and May, the recent deluge was unusually strong and long-lasting, making it the worst flooding the country has seen since May 2020, when around 80 people died. With more rainfall expected throughout the month, the situation remains precarious.
